Join Fak’ugesi Resident Artist Ling Tan to explore wearable computing and the smart city.
The future of a smart city is imagined as a city filled with sensors on every street and corner, in public and private spaces, collecting data about almost everything. How do we as individual make sense of the different types of data out there? Does it make the neighbourhood we are living in a better one? How does it feel to live in a smart city?
These workshop and play events look at this data as “data treasures” waiting to be hunted. When treasures are found, they become resources. Participants will make use of wearable technology platform *WearOn. A tool to help solve issues that concern their relationship with the environment. Play with the data treasures to create wearable pieces that react to their surroundings

Learning about the *WearOn Tool
Early: Thurs. 3rd Sept from 14:00, Wits Art Museum
Late: Thurs. 3rd Sept from 18:00, First Thursdays at the Wits Art Museum
Learn more about the tools used for the Treasure Hunt through the *WearON platform. Learn about different sensors and actuators that can be plugged into the *WearON device. Understanding what types of “data treasures” you can find. Construct the wearable device and play with some 3D printing to house the device in. Participants are required to bring their mobile phone. *WearON app will be installed into their phone in order to play with the *WearON device.
Treasure Hunt!
Session 1: Sat. 5th Sept, from 12:30
Session 2: Sun 6th Sept, from 12:30
Participants will go to the selected sites to collect “data treasures”. This data will be addressed in its ability to solve the issues identified through the initial site selection. Participants will first learn how to prepare the Treasure hunt tool; selecting the type of sensors/actuators, designing how to wear it on their body together with the 3d printed housings provided. Participants are required to bring their mobile phone. WearON app will be installed into their phone to be used for the Treasure Hunt.

Resident Artist Ling Tan is a designer, maker and coder interested in how people interact with the built environment and wearable technology. Trained as an architect, she enjoys building physical machines and prototypes to explore different modes of interaction between people and their surrounding spaces. She is currently working at Umbrellium in London to understand social wearables through community participation. Her works have been featured in magazines and websites across the globe and was nominated for awards such as Internet of Things Awards. www.lingql.com & @LingQL.
